When thinking about which
product to purchase, customers
often find that some products
are easy to compare while others
can be more confusing. When
comparing two automobiles for
example, the customer will
typically find bountiful
information from the car
dealership, sales brochures,
trade publications and test
drives. This wealth of
information can make it easy to
differentiate between models and
make the appropriate purchasing
decision.
But when the customer is
planning to purchase lubricants
and filters, the choices are not
always as clear and the products
can be much more difficult to
differentiate. |
The primary information used in
such purchasing decisions comes
from test data and
specifications, which can be
difficult to interpret for those
not were acquainted with the
industry, To make a solid
lubricant or filter purchasing
decision, one must determine
which information is relevant,
accurate and has been reported
properly.
So
how can a customer insure that
the products he or she wishes to
compare are of equal quality and
properties? Several
organizations make it their
business to set standards that
can be used for comparison
purposes.
United States Steel (USS) was
actually one of the first to
establish specifications for
gear lubes in the early 1 it's.
Since then, the American Gear
Manufacturers Association (AGMA)
has also established standards.
There are nine tests that gear
oils must pass to meet the
specifications and gain
approval.
The American Society of Testing
and Materials (ASTM) has also
established standards for
lubricant and filter testing
here in the United States. In
Europe, the DIN or Deutsches
Insititut fur Normung eV sets
many lubricant and equipment
standards. And the ISO, or
International Standards
Organization issues many
lubricant and filter standards
that apply worldwide.
In
this issue of the Industrial
Insight, we will examine EP Gear
Oils and the standards by which
they are evaluated. We will
explain which tests the industry
has determined to be important
for such products, and also
compare some well-known EP Gear
Oils to these standards. The
results of these comparisons may
be quite surprising.
For this, we examined six
popular ISO-VG 460 EP Gear Oils:
-
Kluber Klubersynth EG 4-460
-
Mobil MobilGear SHC 460
-
Royal Purple Synergy 140/460
-
Schaeffer l 67 Moly Syn
-
Summit Syngear SH 1046
